The Portland Animal Welfare (PAW) Team provides veterinary care to pets of people in extreme poverty. Our mission is to improve animal health and human welfare through veterinary care, education, and advocacy for those who are homeless or in extreme poverty with their pets.
Our volunteer teams help homeless and low-income individuals keep their companion or service animals healthy and well-fed.
PAW Team is a bridge between animal and human welfare, supporting our community by providing:
- preventative veterinary care, thus reducing animal disease and preventing public health crises from diseases such as rabies
- coupons for free spay/neuter services at partnering organizations, thus reducing pet overpopulation in a group that many animal-related groups are unable to reach
- pet food and pet care supplies so that people do not have to give up their own food in order to feed their pets
- subsidized county pet licensing to promote responsible pet ownership
- dog training workshops to encourage well-behaved pets in public spaces
- assistance to our homeless clients in accessing other social services while their pets are being cared for
- support for low-income people to stay in housing or find shelter without having to make the unbearable choice to give up their four-legged family members
A volunteer-based non-profit, PAW Team provides:
- basic veterinary care
- shots, flea/worm treatment
- free/low-cost spay/neuter
- pet food and supplies
- low-cost county licenses
- assistance in accessing social services
- support to stay in housing or find housing/shelter with companion or service animals
