For more than 100 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters has operated under the belief that inherent in every child is the ability to succeed and thrive in life. As the nations largest donor and volunteer supported mentoring network, Big Brothers Big Sisters makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers (Bigs) and children (Littles) in communities across the country. We develop positive relationships that have a direct and lasting effect on the lives of young people.

Big Brothers of Hampton Roads provides military affiliated students with caring adult volunteers based on shared interests and compatible personalities. Our volunteers are members of the community, civilian or service members, who would like to volunteer and give back. Each volunteer is thoroughly background checked, screened and trained. Once matched, the mentor and mentee spend 1 hour each week together at the mentees school. They spend time talking, reading or playing games. A Match Support Specialist from the agency maintains regular contact with volunteers to provide assistance and give feedback. Theyll help with ideas for activities, guidance for handling possible difficult situations, and feedback on how the volunteer is making a difference. Mentors provide students with an added layer of support and encouragement as well as being an additional positive role model. Children who feel better about themselves do better in school and in life!
