CapraCare, Inc. is 501 c (3), not for profit organization that was founded in April of 2009, with the goal of developing a community school health program to address many of the health dilemmas faced by students in the rural community of Fonfrede, Haiti. Its motto 'promoting health change through individual acts of courage' is evident in the organizations mission to reduce health problems within schools and in the community that are related to maltreatment, malnutrition, and lack of access to medical care services for school aged children and adolescents between the ages of five and nineteen years through the dedicated work of its volunteers. CapraCare believes that empowering schools serves the entire community through the provision of ongoing preventative health education; pediatric care services; school lunches, and nutrition education programs.
Capracare is located in the countryside of the city of Les Cayes, Haiti; Fonfrede is an area with an estimated 20,000 residents, not including its surrounding impoverished communities. Fonfrede currently has no access to any public or private medical facilities or preventive health services. The nearest hospital, Hospital of Immaculate Conception of Les Cayes, requires a 45-minute journey by car. Fonfrede, like many rural areas in Haiti, has had persistent, across-the-board health issues. CapraCare currently stands as the only Haitian non-governmental organization located within Fonfrede to address these issues.
Our mission is provide access to medical care, mental health services, and health and nutrition education services, regardless of the ability to pay. Our comprehensive approach helps students, parents, and the community combat the wide range of physical, psychosocial and environmental needs that arise from difficult daily living conditions in Haiti.
