Club College Boulevard (CCB) is a 501 (c) 3 organization, spearheaded in 2009 as a teen-led grassroots initiative in Hampton, Virginia. High school students in low-income areas were beginning to realize they were not able to choose the extent to which they would like to better themselves. Youth encountered numerous hurdles while trying to access resources available to them to higher education. Historically, college attendance (and associated benefits) has been least accessible to traditionally underrepresented populations, including persons from low-income families, first generation students, and persons with limited English proficiency. Prior to incorporating, CCB performed a three-year pilot study focusing on low-income high school students. CCB shadowed students and coached youth through the college admissions process. The benchmarking results of our study indicate that the enthusiasm for youth interested in pursuing a career is prevalent. CCB, however, has identified many critical deterrents that our low-income students are experiencing. The purpose of CCB is to rectify these concerns by hosting workshops for students to make the transition to college. CCB workshops allow students to access computers to complete applications and financial aid paperwork, attend college tours, receive assistance with essay and SAT preps, and applying for scholarships and grants.
